second wildfire in the colorado foothills. by sundown that fire had destroyed at least one home near loveland and grew to about one square mile. in boulder, residents were allowed to return to their burned out homes for the first time since one of the worst wildfires in the state's history spread there. there are now reports that blaze may have been started by a resident's fire pit. that means criminal charges in this case could soon >congionaers >congiont.rs >> if the only option i have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, i'll vote for them. >> reporter: but boehner's admission doesn't mean republicans will abandon the fight. they want tax relief for the nation's top income earners as well, a renewal of bush-era tax cuts set to expire. the white house is digging in.

>> borrowing $700 billion to extend tax cuts that average more than $100,000 a year to millionaires and even billionaires is the least effective bang for the buck we can have. >> reporter: not renewing the bush tax cuts would result in a substantial tax increase for those making more than $250,000. republicans argued that would hurt small businesses. >> why don't we extend these tax -- current tax rates to all americans and get rid of some of the uncertainty that's out there? >> reporter: some democrats have signaled they'll break from party leadership on the issue. even the president's former budget chief wrote an op-ed saying the political consequences for extending tax cuts for all wage earners is worth it. the battle over taxes is only one fight that's ahead. the president obama has proposed new spending to stimulate the economy. leader boehner says it's time to

and welcome back, everybody. even tho even though that massive gulf oil leak has finally been stopped, lots of questions still millions of >> the biggest mystery, what happened to those millions of tt gutman has the story. one group of scientists say they know where it is. well gushn has the story. >> reporter: for 86 days bp's doomed well gushed crude oil into the gulf, over 180 million gallons. so where did it go? 17 exxon valdezes. a as scoop did it go? a noaa study last month said 75% of the oil was scooped up, eyrned off, or evaporated. now researchers say they have a simpler answer. it sank. >> the oil is not gone. it's in pl it's in places where nobody's looked for it. a lot of i there's stuff on the bottom. a lot of it is on the bottom. >> reporter: dr. joye and her team h team have been taking core samples of the sea floor. sh she says they found a field of

oil two inches thick spreading as far as 70 as far as 70 miles from the that we've looked. >> i won in we're finding it everywhere that we've looked. >> i wonder if you could pinpoint one thing for us that is most worrisome about your findings so far. those findings are preliminary, says >> there's nothing living in these cores other than bacteria. i have yet to see a living shrimp, a living worm. nothing. >> reporter: joye, who cautions those findings are preliminary, says if those organisms are affected eventually larger fish and perhaps humans may also be. in a statement the government scys it's "working with academic scientists to monitor aggressively where the oil is subsurface." but that hasn't always been the case. in may joye was part of a team featured on this newscast that discovered giant underwater plumes istration oil. at first the administration

what is your reaction to that? >> well, i obviously haven't seen the comments, but i notice the qualifier "if my only choice is." if he -- if he's truly saying that we can, as the president called for, get a broad consensus to extend the middle-class tax cuts, we should do it. >> and he's obviously saying -- >> we shouldn't hold that hostage for the argument about the tax cuts just for the very, very highest income people. so if he is for that, i would be -- i would be happy. in the past we have seen some of these circumstances in which what appears to be the offer of doing the sensible thing in the light of day, there's a little bit of a feeling, well, if the president's for it i'm against it. and then it falls apart. i believe -- i'm not a political expert. i'm just a policy guy. but i believe there is a broad

consensus, a middle ground, if you will, that democrats and republicans and business people and workers can agree on to get this -- the economy growing faster and getting people back to work. it's exactly what the president tried to do and is trying to emphasize in the policies he outlined this week. and we ought to do that. we ought to come together. ♪ >> from nbc news in washington, "meet the press," with david gregory. >> leader boehner for the republicans, who is saying in an interview that in fact he would support the middle-class tax cuts, the extension of which, which is what the president wants, he said on friday don't hold those hostage. what i'm asking is, is there any room to compromise with republicans, to extend even if it's for two years as your formerly departed budget director called for, those on

upper income americans, those tax cuts in the bush era? >> there's no one who believes mr. boehner -- they called the last set of tax cuts temporary. they're going to continue. i think we have to assume they're going to keep pushing this forward -- but let me make one point clear. what we're proposing is a tax cut for 100% of americans up to $250,000 of their income. so if you make under $250,000, you get a tax cut on all your income. if you make more than, that you get it up to $250,000. so if you're a millionaire, you'll get what everybody else gets up to $250,000. not the $100,000 a year that mr. boehner wants to give. david, we just can't afford it. and really what we ought to do is, as the president said, we agree on the middle-class tax cuts. let's not hold them hostage while we debate whether we're going to give this very small number of people at the top a tax cut that we can't afford. >> you have to wonder whether boehner's comments that he would support the extension of the middle-class tax cuts will open

>> i'd say the chances are zero that those tax cuts get extended. >> reporter: what we are seeing is a white house worried about john boehner becoming the next speaker. and how would the house operate under a speaker boehner? the ohioan has already called for the repeal of the president's health care reform and the financial reform law. so the white house press secretary was quick to point to a "new york times" story. a republican leader tightly bound to lobbyists, including those from wall street. >> so that they can go back to writing the rules themselves. they say we don't need to buy access to mr. boehner, we already have -- >> reporter: mr. boehner has gotten the attention of the white house. press secretary robert gibbs put out a statement late today saying while they welcome his words time will tell if they become action. i'm also told by the white house that the president will be talking about boehner's statement in the coming days. voters in six states and in d.c.

when they head to the polls tomorrow. the last primary before the november election. our senior washington editor rick klein has a preview. >> reporter: delaware is getting so much attention. a sleepy race in the smallest of states getting so much attention at the end because the tea party there could cost relica the country. here christine o'donnell, the tea party favorite, got some late support from sarah palin, from jim demint and others. she's running a very strong challenge against mike hassell, the establishment choice. this could be a case where the tea party takes a big chunk away from the republican chances this fall. an american woman arrested in iran more than a year ago is expected to be heading home later today. sarah shourd is to be freed after her $500,000 bail is paid. iranian authorities agreed to the release because of concerns

them. mila says she's been fr since her family escape explosion and fire thursday night. >> i didn't sleep. look at my eyes. i move to thote it's like stall i can't stay in it's like -- i o m i don't want to stay still. no, i probably get one hour and a half sleep during the whole night. >> reporter: the family is still waiting for pg & e to turn o their gas and power. this view shows the more than 100 residents who are being let back into their san bruno homes in stages. the only people allowed home to green flags. residents are being escorted by dozens of pg&e crews who are turning on power and gas, lighting pilot lights and heaters and stoves. steve hoff is back in his home. he's trying to make sure everything is ready for his family to leave their hotel room and join him. he's concerned that his youngest girls have been badly traumatized by the experience of running out of their house while sirens blared and flames lit up the sky. >> my biggest concern is my 6-year-old and making sure that

she's okay and comfortable. she hasn't been sleeping very good the last couple nights. and you know, the -- just small noises and different things. >> reporter: hoff says he wants to keep the girls away from the devastation and death just down the street. he says they're too young and fragile to be exposed to these scenes where their playground used to be. crews are now battling a second fire in the colorado foothills. the fast-moving fire near love hasesro forcings toll p om ire. th about 90% contained. reports say the blaze in boulder may have been started by a fire pit. a big and powerful hurricane is quickly gaining strength in the atlantic. hurricane igor is on the verge of becoming a category 5 storm with winds overnight topping 150 miles an hour. igor is forecast to brush by bermuda early saturday. it is not expected to make landfall. but it could bring rough surf to the east coast, and tropical storm julia has now been forming behind igor.

call the number on your screen. and welcome back, everybody. now we're going to meet the lion whisperer. kevin richardson is a self-taught animal behaviorist who is committed to the welfare of the african lions that are in his care. >> richardson is the host of a new series on national geographic called "lion ranger." and stephanie sy has his story. >> reporter: provoking a 460-pound teenage lion is a very bad idea. >> be nice. be nice, bandit! >> reporter: lion trainer kevin richardson must carefully analyze the dynamic of this lion pride as he introduces two new members, younger cubs named mafumu and vayetsi. >> be nice! >> reporter: kevin richardson takes personal responsibility

for all these cats. he helped develop this lion park in south africa five years ago for the filming of a movie starring thor, this moody male. five weeks after the cubs mafumu and vayetsi are introduced to their new pride, a tragic discovery. mafumu turns up dead. vayetsi is distraught. and having been separated from other members of the pride for his own safety, lonely. he has lost his best friend. as kevin examines mafumu's corpse, he doesn't see evidence that his death was caused by other lions. >> if he was in a fight, only way they're going to kill this guy is in the neck, immediately a suffocating bite while the others rip him apart. >> reporter: kevin draws another conclusion.

>> look at the swelling. i'm thinking puff adder. the tongue swells up, he can't breathe. >> reporter: puff adder snakes are highly venomous, and one bite would have been enough to asphyxiate a young lion mafumu's size. >> i don't even know what to say. >> reporter: with mafumu gone, kevin faces another dilemma, what to do with vayetsi. >> i've worked with lions so long and this lion is clearly missing his brother. it will take some time like it does in people for him to get over it. >> one of our lions is in desperate need of a partner. >> a partner. >> yeah. he seems a bit lonely. >> i'm 99.9% sure we can help you out. >> reporter: he calls up a nearby lion park to see if there is a cub close to vayetsi's age he can schedule a play date with. there are indeed. >> hello, my sweetheart. are you coming to a new home? are you coming to meet vayetsi? >> reporter: this time kevin is looking for a lioness companion for vayetsi, likely to be more accommodating around the traumatized male.

>> you're quite feisty. >> reporter: he finds the perfect candidate, but she has a sister and livie and ginnie are a package deal. the first meeting is awkward, and kevin is forced to play middle man to ease the tension. and over a couple weeks he does impress the ladies. >> having seen how his happiness has changed over the last couple of weeks, he's completely a relaxed happy lion again. >> reporter: although they also leave their impression on him. ginnie and livie are a naughty handful, and their behavior has clearly rubbed off on vayetsi. >> stop that now. >> reporter: playing among themselves is one thing, but kevin easily becomes a chew toy when he gets in the middle. >> stop it! >> what they don't realize is that i'm just a human and i've got very thin skin. >> reporter: in order to establish his place in the pride as the trainer, kevin has to
